As morning arrived, we checked out of the airport, greeted by the availability of a pre-booked cab, marking the commencement of our adventure. Our first destination was Jaldapara.

To ensure we made it to the Jaldapara National Park in time for the afternoon safari, which had already been arranged in advance, we needed to arrive by at least 2 p.m. However, we wanted to visit the Coronation Bridge on our way, situated between the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Our journey commenced in search of the sanctuary's primary attraction, the Asiatic one-horned rhinoceros. Jaldapara National Park boasts the second-highest population of rhinos, surpassed only by Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Alongside the rhinos, the park is also home to tigers, elephants, various species of deer (such as sambhar, barking, spotted, and hog), wild boars, and bison.

We entered the Madarihat gate, serving as the entrance to Jaldapara National Park and its buffer zone, continuing until we reached Hollong. Throughout our route, there remained ample opportunities for wildlife sightings, as the wild knows no boundaries.

Hollong Bungalow

The highlight of the journey awaited us at the Hollong Bungalow, offering a unique experience of staying within the depths of the jungle. Just outside the bungalow, a salt pit attracted native elephants, deer, rhinos, and bison, allowing tourists to witness these creatures in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, luck did not favor us at Hollong, so we ventured further into the park.

Jaldapara National Park encompasses vast grasslands adorned with pockets of riverine forests. Our exploration continued, and we were greeted by the majestic sight of peacocks and deer as we made our way to the next salt pit. Although we were unable to spot any rhinos this time, we did come across couple of elephants playfully enjoying its meal.

Moving on to another watchtower, we were once again greeted by another magnificent elephant, adding to the awe-inspiring encounters of the day.

Finally, we concluded the day's adventures by immersing ourselves in the captivating tribal dance performed by the local natives, providing a cultural finale to our extraordinary journey in Jaldapara National Park.

 Day 2

The next morning's safari was an enchanting adventure that transported us deep into the heart of nature's wonderland. We set off from the Kodal Basti gate, a gateway to paradise located a mere 30 to 40 minutes away from our cozy resort. Eager to embrace the magic of the wild, we rose early, stirring from our slumber at the gentle hour of 4:30 A.M. Clad in snug jackets, gloves, and winter caps, we braved the chill of a January morning, determined to embark on a thrilling wildlife encounter.

As the cab arrived to whisk us away, time seemed to suspend in anticipation. The darkness of the pre-dawn hours wrapped around us, and the world beyond our vehicle lay shrouded in mist. It was a mystical cloak that had settled upon the forest, infusing it with an otherworldly aura. The air was still, as if holding its breath, and the silence was strangely captivating.

Step by step, our journey unfolded, and the forest gradually awakened from its slumber. A gentle breeze whispered through the towering trunks, causing the leaves to rustle and dance in response. The forest came alive with a symphony of sounds, as birds serenaded the morning with their melodious songs and insects hummed in harmonious unison. The air vibrated with the distant calls of animals, their voices reaching out across the wilderness.

Our first destination was a watchtower, perched amidst the mist-covered landscape. As we ascended its heights, our eyes eagerly scanned the surroundings, hoping to catch a glimpse of the majestic creatures that call this place home. But the mist was thick and impenetrable, veiling the secrets of the wild. Yet, even in the absence of visible wildlife, the very essence of the forest enveloped us, stirring our senses and igniting our imaginations.

Undeterred, our safari continued, traversing through the breathtaking terrain in search of nature's hidden treasures. And lo and behold, the wild revealed itself in all its grandeur. Majestic Indian Bisons emerged from the depths of the wilderness, their powerful presence commanding our attention. Further along the path, our jeep came to a halt, and our eyes widened with delight as we witnessed a family of animals dashing across the road, their synchronized movements a testament to their wild freedom. In that fleeting moment, our hearts swelled with joy, etching the image of this harmonious family encounter deep within our souls.

The allure of the Buxa forest safari, the majestic Jayanti River, the mystical Pokhari Hill, the ancient Buxa fort, and the awe-inspiring Mahakal Caves enticed us further into the embrace of nature's wonders. The Nature Interpretation Centre at Rajabhatkhawa awaited, ready to unveil the secrets of the surrounding ecosystem.

The road to Buxa was a picturesque path that we traveled with anticipation. Along the way, fate had a surprise in store for us. Resting atop a tree, we encountered a fascinating individual, capturing our attention and piquing our curiosity. It was a moment of wonder and intrigue, adding a touch of mystery to our journey.

Upon reaching the forest entry point, we engaged in the necessary formalities before setting our sights on Pokhari Pond. This sacred body of water held a special place in the hearts of the locals, who revered its purity and refrained from treading its waters. With our car parked near the Buxa Forest Office, we sought a local vehicle and a knowledgeable guide to accompany us part of the way, knowing that the remainder of the distance would be traversed on foot as we embarked on a trek towards Pokhri Hill.

Before commencing our trek, we made a delightful stop at nearby shops, acquiring puffed rice as an offering to the denizens of the pond. With our pockets filled, we boarded a local jeep, ready to immerse ourselves in the natural wonders that awaited us. As we journeyed through the trail, nature embraced us in its serene embrace. The air was thick with the scents of flora and fauna, while the vibrant greenery enveloped us like a living tapestry. The harmonious melodies of birdsong serenaded our every step, enhancing the ethereal ambiance of our surroundings. Along our path, we were privileged to witness glimpses of the exquisite wildlife that called this paradise home. Barking deer and resplendent peacocks graced our presence, filling our hearts with awe and excitement.

And then, at long last, we reached Pokhari Pond. Its sheer beauty left us speechless. The sunlight danced on the water's surface, creating a mesmerizing play of shimmering ripples. The crystal-clear waters beckoned us closer, and we marveled at the abundant life that thrived within. The catfishes and turtles eagerly awaited our arrival, gracefully gliding through the water, their eyes fixated on the puffed rice we offered. As we fed them, their playful movements created a symphony of ripples, further enchanting our senses.

Our time at Pokhari Pond was a glimpse into a realm of wonder.

Buxa Tiger Reserve Safari

There are two safari options available, namely the Buxa Core Jungle safari and the Chunia watch tower safari. The safari begins near the Jayanti forest check post. Please be aware that online booking is not available. Instead, I made my booking through my guide, Mohan, whose contact number is 7602487895.

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, India. Spread over an area of approximately 760 square kilometers, the reserve is known for its diverse flora and fauna, as well as its significant cultural and historical importance.

The terrain of Buxa Tiger Reserve is characterized by dense forests, hilly terrains, and meandering rivers, creating a picturesque and ecologically rich landscape. The reserve is part of the Eastern Himalayas and is nestled in the Buxa Hills, which form a natural corridor connecting the forests of Bhutan and West Bengal.

The flora of Buxa Tiger Reserve is incredibly diverse, with dense forests consisting of mixed deciduous trees, evergreen forests, bamboo groves, and various medicinal plants. The reserve is also home to numerous orchid species, adding to its botanical significance.

The wildlife in Buxa Tiger Reserve is equally impressive. It is home to several endangered species, including the Royal Bengal tiger, which is the reserve's flagship species. Other notable animals found here include Indian elephants, leopards, clouded leopards, Himalayan black bears, barking deer, gaur (Indian bison), and several species of primates like langurs and macaques.

The safari commenced at approximately 3:00 PM amidst a forest abundant with sal trees and tall grasses. Known as the largest forest in Dooars, the Buxa Tiger Reserve is characterized by a relatively low tiger population, making sightings rare. Embarking on a safari through the dense and extensive jungle promises to be an unforgettable adventure. One noteworthy aspect was the opportunity to disembark from the jeep near the riverbed, offering an incredible experience.

Additionally, there were plentiful elephant droppings from the previous day. Although a leopard was spotted, it remained at a considerable distance. Aside from the sighting of a Jungle fowl, Barking deer no other animals were observed.

After the safari, we arrived at a homestay in Jayanti for an overnight stay. We engaged in a discussion with Mohan, an enthusiastic guide of Buxa and Jayanti. Originally scheduled to accompany us on the afternoon safari, unforeseen circumstances prevented his participation. However, he visited the homestay, and we finalized our plan to visit Chota Mahakal in Bhutan the following morning.

Eventually, we began our journey back to the Homestay, retracing our steps through the Jayanti river bed. The return trip was just as thrilling as the initial ride, and with each bump and twist, we couldn't help but feel a surge of adrenaline.
